The value of cars, homes, investments is often carefully measured, yet the true cost of absence is rarely considered. Today, Volvo Car Malaysia introduces the Selamat Calculator, an interactive reflection exercise developed in partnership with Mr Money TV to drive home the weight of one's absence and everything it carries.
As part of its life-long commitment to safety, Volvo continues its Selamat mission of empowering and educating Malaysian drivers to make more conscious choices by quantifying what is truly at stake – and reinforcing the importance of being protected when things go wrong.
The Selamat Calculator is designed to turn an unimaginable possibility into a tangible reflection. It asks the difficult question: What happens if you never say, or receive, another “Selamat” again? Through a series of questions covering age, career, income, dependants, lifestyle, and personal stakes, the experience generates a safety risk profile alongside an estimate of the financial and emotional impact left behind, from transferred financial burdens and interrupted progress to futures left unrealised.
Participants are grouped into one of four life-stage profiles: the backbone of the family, the co-pilot in a partnership, the independent soloist with a future ahead, and the climber who has worked tirelessly to build the life they have today. More importantly, the self-assessment experience serves as a reminder that the consequences of inattention, complacency, and inaction are not measured only in a split second, but in the unlived moments, unfinished futures, and people we stand to lose if one day we do not make it home.
Patricia Yaw, Sales & Marketing Director of Volvo Car Malaysia, said: “Nothing is worth more than your life, but there are still times when we forget and take our safety for granted – drivers are humans after all. The Selamat Calculator isn’t meant to put a price on a life, but to act as a gentle reminder to appreciate the value of our presence and what stands to be lost in our absence. Because the true value of our Selamat isn’t measured by wealth but in the we hold close and the accomplishments we make.”
Peter Yong, CEO & Co-Founder of Mr Money TV, said: “At the end of the day, financial literacy is about more than managing numbers; it’s about how we value our most precious resource - our lives. We often prioritise luxuries while overlooking the silent “investments” that keep us around to enjoy them. The Selamat Calculator serves as a wake-up call, encouraging reflection on what truly matters and reminding us that the best and most important choices are not always financial ones, but the simplest: buckling our seatbelts, getting enough rest, or exercising patience behind the wheel. Safety is a shared responsibility. When we choose to stay safe, we do so not only for ourselves, but for everyone else on the road.”
The Selamat Calculator is one of several educational initiatives introduced by Volvo Car Malaysia to reinforce the importance of road safety fundamentals. Alongside the flagship Selamat Driving Experience set to take place on 16 – 17 May 2026, it forms part of Selamat – a thematic campaign by Volvo Car Malaysia, with the aim of transforming road safety from a regulatory obligation into a shared culture of responsibility.
“Selamat is in Volvo’s DNA and every Malaysian’s spirit. In every ‘Selamat’ we say, there’s a quiet wish that our loved ones arrive, live and return safely. Volvo carries the same hope that those around us are protected wherever they go, so that they can live for the moments that matter. We want to be part of the moment that matters most: the journey home.” said Yaw.
The Selamat Calculator is now available online at volvocarmalaysia.com/selamat, inviting Malaysians to reflect on the value of every journey home.
